wandering around the mission district

Saturday my coworker, Hemant, visiting from Bangalore, India and my college friend, Johnny, and I went around the Mission District for a mini food tour. We barred to the city from Daly City so we didn’t have to worry about parking and potentially getting a ticket from the anal meter maids.

Our first stop was a late lunch at Pizzeria Delfina. We ordered the Panna and the Salsiccia Pizzas. Both were pretty good for a thin crust pizza, but my favorite pizza place in the city is Tomassos in North Beach! It’s a small family-owned restaurant, and the service proves quite excellent there! The food makes it worth the wait!

After we stuffed our faces with pizza, we went across the street to Bi-Rite. Even though it was quite chilly, the line wrapped around the corner of the street. Bi-Rite is efficient though so the wait wasn’t long despite the frightening line. I got the burnt coffee and salted caramel. I usually don’t like ice-cream that is too sweet, but these flavors were mouth-watering. We laid on the grass and ate our ice-cream at Dolores Park, you know, where all the Mission hipsters hang out! Ha.

We checked out the boutiques on Valencia St before we had an early dinner at Mission Chinese Food. We wanted to avoid the long wait, but unfortunately we weren’t hungry! We got seated quickly the second they opened. The interior is dingy and petite, and they blasted hip hop music while we dined. They had Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling and a dragon. We ordered the the Westlake Rice Porridge, Salted Cod Fried Rice, and the Ma Po Tofu. All were pretty good, but since I am a true Cantonese person (okay, not really since I was born here), I thought the restaurant is over-hyped and I can get cheaper, authentic, tastier Cantonese dishes in the Richmond or Sunset district.
